Clog dancers in the attic

I don’t have a photo of the clog dancing culprits, most likely pine martens or something similar, but these two tiny snails and the moth were out and about last night. We also saw a fair few bats early on in the evening, some pipistrelle size and others quite a bit bigger. It does seem a bit late in the year for bats as those we had in the UK usually go into hibernation in early October, but it has been about 20C all week and there’s still lots of insect life around. We noticed the lack of slugs, but the 3 resident toads and one rather large hedgehog are maybe to be thanked for that!

The clog dancers are taking a bit of getting used to. You can occasionally hear them clambering down the outside of the house, but most of the time they are “dancing on the ceiling” (who remembers that one?) in the wee small hours. We have had various tips on how to get rid of them – loud music & moth balls feature heavily – but thus far we have lacked the motivation to do anything about them. This may have something to do with the lack of sleep thanks to being kept awake at night by the mobile disco in the roof. Catch-22.
